ADF Fitness Standards (In-Service)

Mastering the physical requirements of the Australian Defence Force (ADF) doesn’t stop once you pass your initial enlistment checks. While the Pre-Enlistment Fitness Assessment (PFA) gets you through the front door, the In-Service Physical Fitness Assessment (PFA/BFT) ensures you remain operationally ready throughout your military career.

Understanding the difference between entry-level testing and ongoing service standards is vital for every candidate, ADFA trainee, and active service member.

PFA vs. In-Service Fitness Standards: What’s the Difference?

Many candidates confuse the initial recruitment fitness test with full military fitness standards. Here is how they differ:

  • Pre-Enlistment Fitness Assessment (PFA): The baseline fitness test conducted by Defence Force Recruiting (DFR) to ensure your body can handle basic training without injury. It features entry-level minimum thresholds for push-ups, sit-ups, and a multi-stage fitness test (beep test).
  • In-Service Fitness Standards: The annual or bi-annual fitness assessments conducted once you join your service branch (Navy, Army, or Air Force) or report to the Australian Defence Force Academy (ADFA). These standards are higher, age- and gender-adjusted, and directly linked to career progression, operational deployment readiness, and performance incentives.

1. Royal Australian Navy: In-Service Standards

The Navy measures physical readiness through core strength (forearm plank) and cardiorespiratory endurance. Scores are tiered based on performance levels.

Forearm Plank Standards (All Ages)

  • Pass (Minimum): 1:00 min
  • Tier 1 Incentive: 1:35 min
  • Tier 2 Incentive: 2:15 min

Form Check: Feet no wider than shoulder width. Hips lifted off the ground with knees straight and ankles at $90^\circ$. Elbows aligned directly below shoulders at $90^\circ$. Forearms parallel or angled inward. Head and neck neutral.

Navy Survival Swim Test Requirements

All Navy personnel must pass the standard RAN Survival Swim Test while wearing military attire to simulate an abandon-ship emergency:

  1. 3-Meter Safety Jump: Vertical drop into deep water.
  2. 10-Meter Underwater Swim: Continuous submerged travel.
  3. 50-Meter Surface Swim: Continuous swim using approved survival strokes.
  4. 15 Minutes Treading Water: Maintaining head above water without flotation assistance.

2. Royal Australian Air Force: In-Sevice Standards

The Air Force assesses physical readiness through upper body strength, core strength, and aerobic capacity. RAAF testing provides options for flexed arm hang vs. push-ups, as well as unsecured vs. secured sit-ups.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the ADF fitness requirements?

ADF fitness requirements vary depending on the service branch, role, and stage of your career. Assessments typically measure cardiovascular endurance, strength, and core stability.

Is the ADF fitness test the same for every service?

No. The Navy, Army, and Air Force each use different fitness assessments based on the physical demands of their roles.

What is included in the ADF physical fitness test?

Depending on the service, the assessment may include push-ups, sit-ups, a forearm plank, the beep test, a swim test, or a timed run.

Are there different fitness standards for specialist roles?

Yes. Specialist positions such as Special Forces and Clearance Divers have higher performance standards and may use age-neutral and gender-neutral benchmarks.

Where can I find the latest ADF fitness requirements PDF?

The most up-to-date fitness standards are available through official ADF and Defence Careers resources, as requirements may change over time.

What happens if I fail an in-service fitness test?

Failing an in-service fitness test places you on a remedial fitness program. Persistent failure can result in loss of deployment eligibility, restricted career progression, or administrative discharge from the ADF.

Are these standards required at ADFA?

Yes. Officer Cadets and Midshipmen at the Australian Defence Force Academy (ADFA) are required to hit their service-specific in-service baseline standards to pass physical training modules and progress through their degree.
