The Entry Hurdles: Are You Ready?
The NZDF Enlisted pathway is competitive. To secure your chosen trade, you must clear the following “Gates” as outlined in the 2024 NZDF Recruitment Standards. Before you begin, review the NZDF application process to understand every stage of recruitment.
1. The G+ Aptitude Gate
Every Enlisted applicant must sit the Verify G+ test. While the “pass mark” for Enlisted roles is lower than for Officers, your score determines which trades you qualify for.
• Critical: If you want a technical trade (like Aircraft Tech), you need a high score in the Numerical and Mechanical modules. Start by taking our free NZDF GMA test to identify areas for improvement before your official assessment.
2. The Assessment Day (A-Day)
You will be invited to a regional recruiting center for:
• Medical Screening: Ensuring you meet the BMI (18-30) and health standards.
• The Behavioral Interview: A conversation focused on how you handle pressure and your commitment to NZDF values: Courage, Commitment, Comradeship, and Integrity.
3. Initial Fitness Test (IFT)
Don’t wait until the week before! You must meet these minimums to even be considered for an offer:
• Navy: 6.1 Beep Test | 15 Push-ups.
• Army: 7.5 Beep Test | 30 Push-ups (Males) / 15 (Females).
• Air Force: 6.5 Beep Test | 30 Push-ups (Males) / 16 (Females).
Enlisted Life: The First 90 Days
Your career begins with Basic Training (Recruit Course). This is designed to break you down and build you back up as a member of the NZDF.
• Navy (Basic Common Training): 18 weeks at HMAS Cerberus (Australia-based training for some roles) or Devonport, Auckland.
• Army (All Arms Recruit Course): 16 weeks at Waiouru.
• Air Force (Recruit Course): 14 weeks at Woodbourne, Marlborough.
