ADF Application Process: Your Step-by-Step Guide

Submitting your application to the ADF involves six primary steps, with certain pathways requiring additional steps.

Understanding the ADF application process is the first step towards a successful career in the Australian Defence Force. Whether you’re applying for an enlisted role, an officer position, or an aviation pathway, knowing what to expect can help you prepare with confidence.

The ADF recruitment process includes several stages, from submitting your application and completing aptitude testing to attending interviews and final assessments. While the exact timeline may vary depending on your chosen role, preparing early can improve your chances of success. STEP 1. Apply online

Start your ADF joining process by creating an account and submitting your application through the ADF Careers website. You’ll be asked to provide personal details, educational history, and up to three preferred roles. After submitting your application, you’ll gain access to the Candidate Hub, where you’ll complete a Supplementary Application Form covering your work experience, achievements, interests, and other relevant information. ADFA applicants must apply separately to both the ADF and the University of New South Wales (UNSW).

STEP 2. Complete a Job Opportunities Assessment

Take a test consisting of multiple-choice questions that assess your verbal, numerical, and abstract reasoning abilities. Your results help determine the most suitable service and role options available to you. STEP 3. Attend a virtual YOU Session

The ADF YOU Session helps you better understand your career options, assessment requirements, and next steps in the recruitment process. You can complete your YOU Session over several days online or attend an ADF Careers Centre, depending on availability and your preferences. Afterwards, return to your Candidate Hub to complete your Medical History Questionnaire.

STEP 4. Attend Assessment and Officer Sessions

You will participate in an Assessment Session that includes a medical examination, a psychological interview, and an ADF interview. For all applicants, follow the instructions in your confirmation email carefully and ensure you bring all required documentation to your session. Officer applicants will also participate in an Officer Selection Board (OSB), which involves panel interviews, group exercises, and individual activities.

STEP 5. Take a fitness test if required

If your chosen role requires a fitness assessment, you will need to complete it before enlistment and meet the physical standards specific to your role. Fitness requirements vary across the Navy, Army, and Air Force, and some roles have additional standards.

STEP 6. Attend enlistment or appointment day

This final step marks your official entry into the ADF. You’ll receive your formal job offer, complete any remaining administrative requirements, and receive instructions for commencing your initial training.

Apply for ‘UNSW, Canberra at ADFA’ through the Universities Admissions Centre (UAC). Your application to UAC is separate to your ADF application.
