Each service branch offers a unique officer career pathway and leadership environment.
⚓ Royal New Zealand Navy (RNZN)
Lead at sea. Navy Officers manage high-tech maritime operations and humanitarian relief.
• Specializations: Maritime Warfare Officer, Marine Engineer, Supply Officer, Navy Doctor.

Lead on the ground. Army Officers are responsible for the lives and morale of their soldiers in the field.

The Selection Process: An Elite Standard
NZDF officer recruitment is designed to assess leadership potential, critical thinking, and decision-making ability.
1. The G+ "Officer Grade" Score
To be considered for an Officer role, “passing” the aptitude test isn’t enough. You must score in the Top 15–20% (A-Grade) of the Verify G+ battery.

2. Officer Selection Board (OSB)
This is the “Make or Break” moment. If you pass your Assessment Day, you will face the OSB— a multi-day evaluation where senior officers watch your every move.
• Leadership Exercises: You will lead a group of peers through “Command Tasks” (Leaderless Group Tasks).
• Public Speaking: Presenting briefs under time pressure.
• Board Interview: A high-pressure panel interview where your ethics, general knowledge, and motivation are scrutinized.
Officer Training: The Forge
Once selected, you begin your training at one of the Service-specific leadership academies.
• Junior Officer Training Course (Navy): 22 weeks at Devonport, focused on maritime law, naval history, and leadership.
• Officer Cadet School (Army): A grueling 12-month course at Waiouru. This is the ultimate test of physical and mental endurance.
• Initial Officer Training Course (Air Force): 18 weeks at Woodbourne, emphasizing aviation management and military command.
