NZDF Application Process: From Registration to Enlistment
Phase 1: Registration & Initial Screening
The NZDF application process begins online through the Defence Careers portal. This stage confirms whether you meet the basic eligibility requirements before progressing further.
• Online Application: You’ll submit your CV, academic transcripts, and work history.
• Prequalifying Questions: A quick check to ensure you meet the baseline requirements (age, citizenship, education).
• Candidate Engagement Facilitator (CEF): Once submitted, you’ll be assigned a CEF. This civilian member of the NZDF is your main point of contact and will guide you through every hurdle.
Phase 2: Aptitude Testing (Verify G+)
As outlined in the April 2024 Preparation Guide, this is the first major “gate.”
• The Format: Remote, proctored online tests (Verify G+ and Mechanical Comprehension).
• The Deadline: You have 14 days to complete these from the moment your CEF sends the link.
• The Stakes: You only get 3 lifetime attempts. A failure results in a 3-month (1st fail) or 12- month (2nd fail) stand-down.

Phase 3: Assessment Day (A-Day)
If you pass your aptitude tests, you will be invited to a regional recruiting centre for Assessment Day. This is a high-pressure environment consisting of:
• Medical Screening: A preliminary check of your vision, hearing, and BMI (standard range 18– 30).
• The Formal Interview: A behavioral-based interview with a Recruiting Officer. They will test your knowledge of your chosen trade and your understanding of the NZDF values: Courage, Commitment, Comradeship, and Integrity.
• Initial Fitness Test: You must meet the “A-Day” benchmarks to prove you are ready for the rigors of recruit school.

Phase 4: The Fitness Benchmarks (2026 Standards)
Physical readiness is an important part of the NZDF application process.

Phase 5: Background & Security Clearances
While your medical file is being reviewed by the Defence Recruiting Medical Board, the NZDF conducts:
• Police & Credit Checks: To ensure you meet the high security standards of the Force.
• Reference Checks: Your CEF will contact your provided referees to verify your character.
Phase 6: The Offer of Service (OOS)
Once you are “Cleared and Recommended,” you are placed in the Candidate Pool.
• The Wait: You may wait several weeks or months for a spot in an intake that matches your trade.
• The Offer: When a spot opens, you will receive a formal Offer of Service. This document outlines your rank, salary, and your Attestation Date.
Phase 7: Induction Day & Attestation
The final step before basic training.
• Final Fitness Check: One last test to ensure you haven’t “slacked off” since Assessment Day.
• Taking the Oath: You will swear allegiance to the Crown and officially become a member of the New Zealand Defence Force.
